Bjarki Returns to bbbbbb Label as Cucumb45

Bjarki is back on his bbbbbb label as Cucumb45.

The Icelandic artist has previously put out two EPs as Cucumb45, both in 2017. This latest one comes after his excellent Bjarki album on !K7 earlier in the year.

“IIIiiiIIiiiiiiiiiiiiiIIIIIIIiiiiiiiIIIIIiiiiiiii” loops a voice saying that title and shifts it through many different pitches and tempos as a flurry of breakbeats, rave stabs, and jungle hits all get you in a spin. It leads into the icy drum & bass of “OpxThermin,” with its tumbling hits and booming bass, weird animal sounds, and general sense of unabashed energy.

“Get slothered 6even2” is a darker track with more of his intense drum programming overlaid with occult vocals, sci-fi mystery, and shooting lasers. “Rathakrem” then pairs things back somewhat to a more haunting atmosphere, with suspensory pads but still a blizzard of IDM drum work. “Crying Indian and Laser Horse” closes the EP with melancholic chords and wrought synths.

Previous bbbbbb records have come from Volruptus, Kuldaboli, Lord Pusswhip, and more.

Luca Duran (f.k.a Look Like) Pays Tribute to ’80s New Wave on New EP

Luca Durán (f.k.a Look Like) will return return to his own Akoya Circles with a new EP next month, titled Circunvalar.

Luca Durán is the birth name of Look Like, who has previously appeared on Mistress Recordings, Clone’s Royal Oak, and Akoya, which he set up in 2016 for his “best and most deep diving work.” The Swiss artist dropped the alias in October with a post on Facebook.

The four-track outing is a “personal and muscular” tribute to the analogue innovation and body music of the 1980s. It’s said to incorporate hints of new wave, soft industrial, and proto-acid.

The record opens with the punchy “Body Mechanics,” a physical jam loaded with vampish synths and pounding drums. “Romancia Negativa” was recorded while touring in late 2018, and is informed by the experimentation of DIY songwriting and band culture. “Life Wires” is a deceptively complex analogue jam that bubbles with analogue energy, before the EP concludes with “Circunavalar.”

Artwork comes from Ausias Pérez.

Yoyaku Launches Belastro Creative Studio & Manufacturing Workshop

Yoyaku will launch Belastro, a creative studio and manufacturing workshop, this week, running from their Paris headquarters.

Belastro will be headed up by Benjamin Belaga and Baptiste Nicastro, who set up Yoyaku in 2015. What was originally a record store has now evolved into an agency and a distributor, plus a slew of in-house labels and sub-labels.

The French duo have been working on the design of Yoyaku’s sleeves and posters, as well as on a number of other projects.

“These experiences sparked our interest to experiment with a variety of media, which led to the acquisition of our own manufacturing workshop, including silk printing machines, laser machines, a 3D printer, etc.,” they explain. “We have been receiving a growing number of requests regarding our designs, both from music industry professionals and those in other creative industries. We intended to internalize our own production of vinyl sleeves and merchandizing, in a local and environment-friendly approach, but we soon realized that these new activities could also benefit others.”

Beginning today, Belastro will run independently to Yoyaku. You can find more information here.

DJ Nigga Fox Returns to Príncipe with New Double EP

DJ Nigga Fox is back on Príncipe with a new double EP, titled Cartas Na Manga.

Cartas Na Manga arrives four years after Nigga Fox’ last EP on the Lisbon label, and a year or so after his Crânio ‎12″ on Warp.

“What does in fact amount to an album can be seen as the proverbial show of maturity, if you will, but to us it’s definite proof of vitality and personality in this game,” Príncipe explains. “Cartas Na Manga offers introspective joy in our effort to connect many loose dots inside the groove of each track.”

Artwork comes from Márcio Matos.

Founded in 2011, Príncipe releases contemporary dance music coming out of Lisbon. DJ Firmeza and Puto Tito have both put out music on the label this year.

Leif, Jack Michael, and Alec Falconer Arrive on XLR8R+ for UK Edition

For the 16th edition of XLR8R+, we turn to the United Kingdom, with three tracks coming from some of the country’s most exciting artists. To celebrate the edition, we’re also throwing a party for XLR8R+ members at FOLD on October 26, headlined by Onur Özer, Quest, and Sugar Free, followed by an after-party featuring Jack Michael, Alec Falconer, and the rest of Orbital London, as well as Silverlining and WXC.

Opening this edition is Leif, who grew up in Wales but bases himself in Bristol. The Whities signee, a specialist in pace and restraint in music, delivers an alternative mix of “Untitled,” which originally appeared on his 2015 album, Taraxacum. The track is typically delicate and soothing, but with its new beat framework, it’s propulsive enough for a club.

Up next we have Jack Michael and Alec Falconer, two artists who are making names for themselves across the UK. Jack Michael, who calls Essex home, shares a chunky garage cut; titled “From London, it follows his latest release on Orbital London, which comes recommended by Phonica. Falconer, who closes the edition with “Hospital Interview,” pairs a slick, driving bassline with an obscure vocal sample and delicate piano work.

On artwork duties is Harry Luderman, who heads up the design of Orbital London. The Londoner brings all this music together with a colorful illustration and some subtle messaging!

The package, including the tracks, zine, and wallpaper artwork, is downloadable via Bandcamp once you SUBSCRIBE HERE.

You can stream snippets of the release below, along with a preview of this month’s zine, which will also be printed in a limited-edition run for Bandcamp and those attending the party.

All tracks mastered by Kamran Sadeghi.

We thank you for joining our independent movement.

Enjoy the offering.

Kamaal Williams Drops Three New Tracks Ahead of ‘DJ-Kicks’

Kamaal Williams (a.k.a Henry Wu) has released his Exclusives EP, containing three brand new tracks plus the recently released “Wivout U,” all of which feature in his upcoming DJ-Kicks mix.

Starting up laid-back and smooth before taking off, “Snitches Brew” (live in Atlanta) spirals skywards in a jungle-jazz-trap-funk frenzy. Then things take a subtler, reflective tone with the plaintive blue mood of “Shinjuku,” before powering on with the jackin’ cosmic grooves of “Wivout U,” and finishing on the lush string-laced urban house of “Strings (ATL).”

Williams’ DJ-Kicks, coming November 8, is said to encompass Karriem Riggins’ Detroit beat weirdness, Peven Everett’s funk-driven Chi house, and Max Graef/Ratgrave’s German future funk. You can find more information here.

Earlier this year I went to the US and linked with musicians Greg Paul, Marlon Spears, and Quinn Mason. We went on Adult Swim and performed in front of several fish. “Snitches Brew” (live in Atlanta) and “Strings (ATL)” are the recordings from that psychedelic performance which also featured Jitwam, my brother from Mumbai. I had never played with Quinn before (saxophone), and when he asked ‘what are we gonna play today,’ I said ‘today we are not playing, we are feeling…’ He nodded and proceeded to blaze out melodies which drew intergalactic forces into our vibrations. Greg then proceeded to roll a blunt.

‘Shinjuku’ is the opening music from our Tokyo show at Billboard. When I listened back to a recording of the gig, I realised how many emotions are portrayed through the music. Takeshi Kurihara sang (on his sax) and softened the hearts of the universe. I present to you… MY EP ON !K7.” —Kamaal Williams

Tomorrow night, Williams will play a headline DJ set at the London launch of his DJ-Kicks mix alongside Steve Spacek, Wbeeza, and Marshmello. Tickets are available here and further worldwide club/live dates follow below.

Tracklisting

01. Kamaal Williams “Snitches Brew” (Live in Atlanta)
02. Kamaal Williams “Shinjuku” (DJ-Kicks)
03. Henry Wu “Wivout U”
04. Kamaal Williams “Strings (ATL)”

Exclusives EP is available now, with a stream below and order here.

Warp Reveals New TNGHT EP

TNGHT will release their new EP, TNGHT II, on November 12 through Warp and LuckyMe.

The seven-tracker comes seven years after the duo—formed of Hudson Mohawke (a.k.a Ross Birchard) and Lunice (a.k.a Lunice Fermin Pierre II)—released their last EP, 2013’s Acrylics, after which they announced a hiatus. Since then, Hudson Mohawke shared his second album, Landern, in 2015, and Lunice dropped his debut album, CCCLX.

Last month, the duo shared “Serpent,” and they also recently completed a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix.

Lunice explains their new collaboration: “While it doesn’t sound the same as the first record, the energy is. This could only come from us.”

Hudson Mohawke adds: “I think it’s a good indicator if something sounds weird and refreshing to us. It’s got to fuck with us a little bit when we’re listening to it.”

05. What It Is
