Overmono to Release Debut Album

Overmono, the collaboration of Tom and Ed Russell, will release their debut album via XL Recordings.

Good Lies follows a run of ground-breaking club EPs between 2020 and 2022, including Cash Romantic, Everything U Need, Diamond Cut / Bby, and “Blind Date,” a collaboration with Joy Orbison.

Across 12 tracks, it remoulds and interweaves captivating vocal cuts into a series of multi-genre electronic sounds that flits effortlessly between euphoria and melancholy.

“Across the last two years, we have spent so much time on the road, making music whenever we could,” Overmono have said in a statement. “Moving around all the time was always really inspiring and got us experimenting a lot and having fun with how we created chords or chopped and pitched vocals. This album is really a letter of love to the journey so far and marks where we want to take things.”

Alongside the announcement, Overmono has shared “Is U” with a cinematic new visual, shot and directed by long-time collaborator, photographer, and film-maker Rollo Jackson.

You can hear one of the other album tracks, “Walk Thru Water,” too.

Yaeji’s Debut Album Incoming on XL Recordings

Photo: Dasom Han

Yaeji will release her debut album on XL Recordings.

Dreamt up across New York, London, and Seoul, With A Hammer is a 13-track full-length that blends Yaeji’s original dance music roots with Korean indie rock, electronica, and pop from the ‘90s and early 2000s.

Conceptually, it follows her as she “wades through the murkiness of sorrow and doubt” and releases a “frenzy of anger,” with the help of a metaphorical hammer which she wields to smash the rigid rules, expectations, and barriers that have prevented her from speaking her fullest truth, we’re told.

Yaeji enlisted some close friends to join her on the record, including British musician Loraine James, Baltimore singer Nourished By Time, plus New York producers K Wata and Enayet.

Born in Flushing, Queens in 1993, Yaeji has roots in Seoul, Tokyo, Atlanta, and New York, all serving as the backdrop for a sound that synthesizes influences of Korean indie rock and electronica, late ‘90s, and early 2000s hip-hop and R&B, and left-field bass and techno.

After breaking out with her 2017 debut EPs that featured singles “Raingurl” and “Drink I’m Sippin On,” Yaeji featured on Charli XCX’s 2019 album, Charli, and produced remixes for Dua Lipa and Robyn. In 2020, she released WHAT WE DREW 우리가 그려왔.

Ahead of the release, Yaeji has shared “For Granted,” which arrives with a music video directed by and starring Yaeji herself.

Podcast 783: MI-EL

Melissa Fund, better known as MI-EL, is an emerging DJ from London who has been obsessed with music for as long as she can remember. “I was playing instruments from a really young age and there was always a lot of music and dancing around me while growing up,” she tells XLR8R, “so I really think it just snowballed from there.” She made a name for herself while living in Leeds, where she hosted radio shows on Sable Radio, before moving to Leipzig, Germany, where she played squat parties and became known for her genre-hopping, bass-heavy sets. There, too, she joined Music of Colour, a community space that amplifies the voices of people of color working in the music industry. “When I first started going out I remember the discomfort I felt entering club spaces and encountering countless white performers relentlessly appropriating elements of black culture for white audiences in a way that was frustratingly un-nuanced and tasteless,” she told Origins Sound recently. Today, she’s a co-booker of south Bermondsey spot Venue MOT and a key figure behind party series Late Night Shopper. For this week’s XLR8R podcast, she’s compiled a mix of high-tempo percussive rhythms and hard-hitting grooves, recorded on the fly yesterday and sure to get your body shaking.

01. What have you been up to recently?
Girl bossing, girl sleeping, girl laying down, etc.

02. What have you been listening to?
Fell into a bit of a baroque choral spiral the other week

03. What appeals to you about DJing?
The dancefloor is a really special space to me. I’d say it’s all jumbled up in a lot of thoughts about my politics of feeling and moving and being.

04. Where and when did you record this mix?
Yesterday, January 16, at Venue Mot.

05. What setup did you use?
Martin audio sound system and Pioneer CDJs and mixer.

06. How did you go about choosing the tracks that you’ve included?
I checked in with how I was feeling.

07. Where do you imagine it being listened to?
March to battle.

08. What’s on your agenda for 2023?
Focus, precision, and general big bad bitch-ery.

The album follows a busy year for AD 93, which included releases from Dylan Henner, Venus Ex Machina, and of course Moin.

Podcast 782: SØS Gunver Ryberg

You’ll find the work of SØS Gunver Ryberg, a Danish sound artist and composer, on labels including AD 93 (f.k.a Whities), Noise Manifesto, Samuel and Hayley Kerridge’s Contort, and Shifted‘s Avian—which is where she released her first album, 2019’s Entangled. Now she’s back with SPINE, her second album, on which she channels her dextrous sound design into time-bending music that fluctuates between electrifying techno, experimental ambient, and soundsystem-shaking bass music. It’s the inaugural release of Arterial, her own label.

Ryberg, who was born Gunver but goes by Søs and grew up in the Danish countryside, didn’t give music her full attention until around 2005; before that she trained as a stuntwoman. “I grew up being extremely wild and I’ve always loved fighting,” she told RA. “Not like with fists and stuff. Wrestling. For fun.”

She began experimenting with digital music production after a push from a vocal teacher, and she’s since crafted a career not only through her pummelling club rhythms but her video game soundtracks, film scores, and dance, performance, and installation pieces. She has worked on Danish developer Playdead’s 2016 game “Inside,” and in 2018 she composed the soundtrack for “Cutterhead,” a claustrophobic thriller directed by Rasmus Kloster Bro. What unites her work is its transformative power, and how it explores states of consciousness and the complexities of the individual. “Music is not entertainment for me,” she tells XLR8R. “But a necessity.”

Like her music, Ryberg’s XLR8R podcast, which we’ve been trying to lock in for years, is delicate but fierce. Across its run-time, you’ll hear music from Loraine James, Jana Rush, Vladislav Delay, Lee Gamble, and more—morphed into a mix that’s dynamic and immersive. Beautiful yet brutal.

01. What have you been up to recently?
I have been playing some concerts around Europe and busy getting my album SPINE ready for release. It’s been an exciting process for me. In the autumn I went to the pressing plant RPM Records and saw for the first time how records are actually made and we talked about how RPM makes records environmentally friendly and this is what convinced me to make SPINE a vinyl release as well. Since then it’s been a lot of communication, setting up distribution, and talking with the graphic designers. Every creation has an uncountable amount of decisions. We tend to forget that and I’m very fascinated by these thoughts. I can’t comprehend how many decisions I’ve made if I also include my whole music creation in these thoughts. It’s mind-blowing!

02. What have you been listening to?
I have been listening so much to jazz. My partner found a radio in the street trash but it’s hard to change the channel so it’s stuck on a Danish jazz radio station. I have actually been enjoying listening to jazz again. It’s a great way for me to start the morning. Especially these days because it’s raining all the time. Besides that, I have been listening to podcasts: people talking about a subject mostly about technology development and AI. I don’t really listen to much electronic music.

03. Where and when did you record this mix?
I recorded it at my house. One evening in January.

04. How did you go about choosing the tracks you’ve included?
These artists I have chosen are mainly about energy, raw spirit, sound design, interesting composition ideas, and lots of fast rhythms with so much uniqueness. I also incorporated voice as an element. Either the voice is already in the track or I have added it on top. Using voice samples is something I started to do in my own music again in 2020. I also wanted to mix sound artists with more experimental club music.

05. How does it compare to what we might hear you play live?
As I only perform my own music live. So, I guess it’s about the raw energy, the experimentation. The freedom of sound. New ways of merging material and expression.

06. Where do you imagine it being listening to?
Everywhere you want to listen. Surprise me. Everyone is welcome to write to me and tell me how they heard it.

07. What’s on your horizon for 2023?
As I’ve mentioned, the SPINE release is coming out soon. I have more concerts coming up. I’m also going to compose and perform a spatial music concert in a warehouse as part of a light installation together with light collective Pleasure Control. I’m finishing the opera and then I’m working with 3D artist Ida Lissner on a project too.

Fantastic Negrito Announces Reimagined Acoustic Version of ‘White Jesus Black Problems’

Fantastic Negrito, born Xavier Dphrepaulezz, will release Grandfather Courage, a reimagined acoustic version of his 2022 album, White Jesus Black Problems.

Part love story, part history lesson, Grandfather Courage tells the defiant tale of Dphrepaulezz’ seventh generation white Scottish indentured servant grandmother, Betty Gallimore, who was living in a common law marriage with his seventh generation African-American enslaved grandfather.

“The incredible story of my seventh generation grandparents was so profound,” Dphrepaulezz says. “I reimagined it through the lenses of my touring band.”

Dphrepaulezz previously offered fans a preview of the collection with “Oh Betty.” Today, he has released another taste with “Highest Bidder” (Reimagined Acoustic Version).

“If you want to take your mind, body, and soul on a trip check out the reimagined recording of ‘Highest Bidder’ through the lenses of my touring band,” he says. “At the time, I was listening to a lot of African drum patterns, and that definitely influenced this song. I’m trying to convey what I see when I walk down the street here in Oakland.”

Dphrepaulezz’s own story is stranger than fiction. He first released an album in 1996, but a near fatal car crash in 1999 in effect ended the first chapter of his career. It resulted in him spending three weeks in a coma and initially losing almost all movement in his right hand, drastically limiting his ability to play guitar. All three of his previous studio albums have won the GRAMMY Award for Best Contemporary Blues album: The Last Days of Oakland, Please Don’t Be Dead, and Have You Lost Your Mind Yet?

Deathprod to Deliver New Album of Deeply Atmospheric, Grainy Minimalism on Smalltown Supersound

Oslo’s Deathprod, born Helge Sten, will release a new album on Smalltown Supersound.

The first new Deathprod studio project since 2019’s OCCULTING DISK, Compositions is the result of an intense period at Sten’s legendary Audio Virus Lab studio in central Oslo, Norway. All 17 tracks are released in the order in which they were recorded, using a combination of obsolete digital audio processors and sound generators, combined with his own “secret-sauce tuning system,” we’re told.

What we can expect is a deeply atmospheric, grainy minimalism that slows time down and explores the very particles of sound itself. Even the gaps between the tracks are part of that universe. Sten left the almost silent, twitching crackles of his snoozing analogue gear intact, ensuring a smoother transition between them. The music can sound “forbidding and alien at first,” we’re told, but compared to his more brutal output, it’s an “extraordinarily intimate experience,” directing your attention to a succession of ever more spellbinding details and textures.

Ahead of the release, Sten has shared lead single “Composition 1,” which gently submerges listeners in Deathprod’s new soundscape.

Sten, who adopted the Deathprod alias in 1991, is the founder of Norwegian improvising group Supersilent, and has produced records by Motorpsycho, Susanna, Jenny Hval, and Arve Henriksen, among others. He recently composed music for Harry Partch’s legendary instruments, which can be heard on Sow Your Gold in the White Foliated Earth, released last year on Smalltown Supersound.

Podcast 781: Eamon Harkin

Eamon Harkin, hailing from Derry in Northern Ireland, is a DJ-producer and label owner based in Brooklyn. Most of you’ll know him as the co-founder of the longstanding weekly Mister Saturday Night and Mister Sunday parties, which have become a pillar of the New York dance music community. Started in 2009 in DIY spaces and back yards, the parties have since moved to Nowadays, where as resident he DJs alongside Aurora Halal, DJ Voices, Physical Therapy, DJ Python, Anthony Naples, Justin Carter, Ayesha, Livwutang, Musclecars, Honcho and Shyboi. Alongside Carter, his business partner, he tours internationally as a DJ duo and runs Mister Saturday Night Records, where he releases his own house tunes plus those from Gunnar Haslam, Ciel, and Tygapaw. You’ll also find his music on Fixed Rhythms, Coastal Haze, and Sorry Records.

Harkin’s route into electronic music began in London, when he began buying records and playing small hip-hop parties. He’d regularly attend Trash in Glasgow, Scotland, before moving to New York, where he would play Motherfucker, a rock party, but over time he began to move towards more beat-driven stuff. House. Techno. Dub. Around 2009, he met Carter for a donut at Peter Pan up in Greenpoint and a friendship blossomed. After the pair’s latest season of parties, and an EP on Massimiliano Pagliara‘s Funnuvojere label, Harkin has taken some time to reflect. To cap off the year, he couldn’t think of a better way than to deliver a podcast, in this case a recording from the final Mister Saturday Night event of the year, on October 25, a Halloween special. In the week’s XLR8R podcast, you’ll hear some crisp house music, dubbed out bliss, and dark moody techno.

01. What have you been up to recently?
Taking a breather as the weather has become colder here in New York after a busy outdoor Mister Sunday season. I’ve been turning my attention to my own music, prepping this latest release on Massimiliano Pagliara‘s label and there’s also another release coming on Sorry Records. Then I’ve been firing up the machines in my studio and writing new material.

02. How was your 2022?
It was great but intense. Along with Justin Carter I operate a club and community space, Nowadays in Ridgewood, New York. Working each week with our team of bookers and managers, we oversee DJ bookings and all aspects of operations and marketing. It’s been a challenging year because the city has emerged from the pandemic and the community of dancers and artists has re-integrated the ecosystem we’re all a part of. Nowadays plays a big role in that ecosystem so there’s always plenty of important and challenging work on the team’s table each week.

03. What have you been listening to?
Not too much dance or electronic music these past few weeks in keeping with taking a bit of a break. The following LPs have been in rotation: This Mortal Coil Filigree & Shadow; Cluster Grosses Wasser; Jamie Branch Fly or Die; Maija Sofia Bath Time.

04. When and where did you record this mix?
The mix was recorded live at the last Mister Sunday of the season which also happened to be our Halloween party. The party runs from 3-9pm each Sunday and this recording was taken from the 5-7pm-ish part of the day so you’ll notice it gets headier later in the mix as we enter the peak time. Because it was Halloween I featured a few tracks to meet the mood of the day.

05. What setup did you use?
Two Technics turntables, four Pioneer CDJs, and a Condessa Carmen V mixer.

06. How did you go about choosing the tracks you’ve included?
All my DJ sets are freeform improvisations using a bag of records and a stacked USB utilized in response to how I’m reading the dancefloor at that time. With that said, I wanted to maintain a certain tone in keeping with the fact that it was Halloween.

07. Where do you imagine it being listened to?
In the car, in the gym, while taking a long run. It has energy to it and there are a few twists and turns so my hope is folks listen in an immersive way.

08. What’s next on your horizon?
As I mentioned earlier I have another EP coming out soon so we’re finishing the artwork on that right now.

Podcast 780: Skream

This week’s podcast comes from Skream, the English artist otherwise known as Oliver Jones. Jones’ journey through music began when he was a young boy in south London. He’s been DJing since he was 11 and making music since he was 15. In 2005, he released “Midnight Request Line,” a landmark moment in the dubstep movement, and alongside artists like Benga and Loefah he played a key role in the genre’s commercial success—moving it from a darker, more minimalist form of club music to something melodic and accessible. He also formed part of Magnetic Man, a supergroup alongside Benga and Artwork, whose self-titled debut album reached number one on the UK dance charts in 2010.

Fast forward to today and Jones is a purveyor of disco, house, and techno, putting out music on Crosstown Rebels, Dennis Ferrer’s Objectivity, Alan Fitzpatrick‘s We Are The Brave (including the hit “Poison” in 2018) and, more recently, Circoloco. In November he collaborated with Jansons for “World Is Empty,” a modern reimagining of The Supremes classic, with a driving electro bassline and nostalgic synths. Recorded just before the Christmas break, Jones’ XLR8R podcast comes in celebration of this latest release. At just over an hour in length, it’s filled with some of his favorite tracks of the year. As you’d expect from Jones, it has a rave-inspired, freewheeling groove, plus plenty of jagged textures and emotional vocal breakdowns.

01. What have you been up to recently?
The same. Gigging, making tunes, and getting ready for my New Zealand and Asia tour.

02. What have you been listening to?
If I’m completely honest mainly stuff I’ve been playing and making. I’ve been playing brand new stuff from Bibi, Interplanetary Criminal, Ghoulish and a bag load of new ones from me.

03. How has your 2022 been?
It’s been good. I’ve had an amazing festival season with highlights including Creamfields, Parklife, and so many more. I’ve been as prolific as ever in the studio so that’s always a bonus. I’ve also had two massive releases on CircoLoco Records that has teed up 2023 nicely.

04. When and where did you record this mix?
I recorded it at home on two CDJs and a mixer.

05. How did you choose the tracks you’ve included?
To be honest, I was just rolling out some new bits I’ve been sent and was seeing where I ended up.

06. Where do you imagine it being listened to?
Definitely at the pre-party or the after-party.

07. What can the listener expect?
A mixture of things I’ve liked from throughout the year mixed with a load of new bits towards the end.

08. What’s on your agenda for 2023?
More clubs, more releases, more parties.
